Totems

Every Indigenous person has a totem. A totem can be an animal, bird, plant, rock or element. Totems create a sense of belonging and spiritual connectedness to the land and others in their tribe (Western Australian Indigenous Tourism Operators Council 2017).  The goanna is the totem for Wiradjuri people.

ACTIVITY 5

Click on the wallaby picture and read the information about Aboriginal totems.

After reading the information, think about an animal that you would like to represent you as your own totem.

Draw your totem on a piece of art paper and colour your animal using pencils, crayons, oil pastels or paint.

Share your totem with the class explaining why you have chosen that animal and how you believe it represents you.
